Last

The Genesis Pages

The genesis of Last

Is rooted in a personal and intimate reflection on themes of solitude, hope, and humanity facing the unknown. The idea emerged at a time when I wanted to explore profound emotions through a strong visual narrative, focusing on characters who, despite their isolation, convey a powerful sense of resilience.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted a minimalist yet symbolic film, where every shot would tell a story. Inspired by cinematic works that emphasize aesthetics and silence, I aimed to create an immersive atmosphere that is both oppressive and poetic. Using Blender to bring Last to life was a significant challenge, as I had no prior knowledge of 3D animation. This pushed me to learn on the go, experiment, and push my technical and creative boundaries.

The film was born out of a desire to depict humanity facing collapse while retaining fragments of hope. Through desolate landscapes and carefully crafted visual choices, I sought to convey raw and sincere emotion while leaving room for the viewer's interpretation. Collaborating with musicians for the soundtrack was also essential to enhance the emotional impact of the scenes.

Enter the World of Last

Explore the visual and emotional universe of Last, from the design of characters and landscapes to the construction of each scene. The film’s aesthetic balances minimalism and symbolism, creating an atmosphere that is both intense and contemplative. Every choice from lighting to composition is intended to guide the viewer through the story while leaving space for personal interpretation.

Last  is, above all, a human journey filled with laughter, tears, joy, and a true artistic drive.

A Personal Journey Behind the Animation

In this animated film, I took on the dual role of director and bringing Arhon to life, fully immersing myself in the world and the story. Embodying this character, even through animation, allowed me to deeply feel his emotions and guide the film with an intimate and artistic vision.

A Defining Role for Athénaïs Marchant

In this animated film, Athénaïs Marchant, an emerging director known for her work on Abymes, took on the role of Liam. This part proved to be a truly defining experience for her, allowing her to explore new emotional depths and bring a unique sensitivity to the character, leaving a lasting impact on both her performance and the film’s storytelling.

Bridging Worlds Through Music

Working across various mediums was essential for this film, and music plays a central role in shaping its atmosphere. I was looking for a pianist for the project, and Lucie Hermary, an independent director known for her film Last Night, connected me with the exceptional Nora Cros. She performed a piano rendition of Mutter by the renowned metal band Rammstein, adding a unique emotional layer to the story.

With this blend of dedication, collaboration, and artistic vision, the project came to life, resulting in the creation of the film Last.

Liam's Artwork

Creating the character of Liam was a real challenge. I aimed to capture an aesthetic that combines simplicity with inner turmoil. To achieve this, I drew inspiration from my surroundings and personal experiences, giving the character an authentic emotional depth.

Photography Art

Last is not just a static cinematic work; it explores multiple mediums. Here, a series of photographs highlights the character Ash, portrayed by the talented Romane Mazzocca, while staying true to the film’s raw and unique aesthetic.

Music Work

Working across various mediums was extremely important to me, and music plays a crucial role in the film. I had the privilege of collaborating with the exceptional musician Nora Cros, who performed a piano cover of Mutter by the renowned metal band Rammstein.

Me and Blender 3D...

Blender was more than just software; it became an essential companion in bringing Last to life. Every model, every movement, every light was crafted with patience, curiosity, and passion, transforming technical challenges into a language of emotion and enabling the film to convey feelings that would have been impossible otherwise.
